Every once in awhile, it seems like life lets dreams become real - and that is a gift.ATLANTA -- As acting manager for the day, Angels bench coach Dino Ebel asked for a close game so he could make lots of moves. Ebel got his wish with a marathon game packed with momentum shifts. Kole Calhouns bases-loaded single in the 13th inning drove in the go-ahead run and the Los Angeles Angels recovered after blowing a four-run lead in the ninth to beat the Atlanta Braves 11-6 Saturday night. "That was fun," Ebel said, grinning after the game. "It was a roller-coaster ride, but it was good." Angels manager Mike Scioscia missed the game to attend the funeral of former Dodgers teammate Bob Welch in Arizona. Mike Trout and Albert Pujols each had three hits, including back-to-back homers in the sixth inning, and drove in four runs. Evan Gattis homered for Atlanta. The Angels won despite blowing a 5-1 lead in the ninth and a 6-5 lead in the 10th. "We never quit and they never quit," Trout said. "Give them props. They scored four runs against us in the ninth. But we kept battling and put ourselves in position to win the game." Erick Aybar led off the 13th with his fourth hit, an infield single, and moved to second on catcher Gerald Lairds passed ball. David Hale (2-1) walked pinch-hitter C.J. Wilson and hit Chris Iannetta with a pitch to load the bases. Calhouns soft fly ball fell just in front of centre fielder B.J. Upton, who attempted a sliding catch, to give Los Angeles the lead. Trouts two-run double and Pujols two-run single pushed the lead to five runs. "I just cant walk people like that," Hale said. "That was the big problem." The teams combined to use 16 pitchers in a game that lasted nearly 5 hours. Fernando Salas (4-0) pitched two scoreless innings. Josh Hamilton drove in Pujols with a single off Craig Kimbrel in the 10th inning to give the Angels a 6-5 lead. The Braves pulled even on Jason Heywards run-scoring, broken-bat single off rookie Cam Bedrosian. The Braves trailed 5-1 before scoring four runs in the ninth on five straight hits off Ernesto Frieri, costing Garrett& Richards a win after he set a career high with 10 strikeouts in six scoreless innings.dddddddddddd B.J. Upton had a two-run triple and Freddie Freemans double drove in the tying run. Frieri gave up four runs without recording an out. "Ernie just got the ball up and they squared it up," Ebel said. "Hell get the ball again." Bedrosian faced immediate drama in the 10th. Tommy La Stella led off with a single and moved to second when Bedrosian dropped the ball on the mound for a balk. With his father, former Braves pitcher Steve Bedrosian, watching from a luxury suite, the young Bedrosian recorded one out before giving up an infield hit to pinch-hitter Ramiro Pena and Heywards tying single to right field. An intentional walk to Freeman loaded the bases before right fielder Calhoun charged toward the infield to make a diving catch on Justin Uptons fly ball, ending the inning. "Beautiful," said Ebel of the catch. "Awesome," added Trout. "It saved the game for sure." Richards allowed only four hits with three walks. He has allowed a combined 12 hits and one run in three dominant June starts. Pujols drove in the Angels first run off Gavin Floyd with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Ebel improved to 3-0 this season as Scioscias stand-in. Ebel was the acting manager for two wins when Scioscia was attending his daughters college graduation in May. Floyd allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1-3 innings. NOTES: Richards previous career high was nine strikeouts in two games this season -- May 3 against Texas and June 4 at Houston. ... B.J. SAN DIEGO -- Other than one bad pitch, Chicago Cubs left-hander Travis Wood had a pretty good night. Wood came within five outs of pitching his first career shutout before allowing Carlos Quentins pinch-hit, two-run home run, and Chicago held on to beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 Saturday night. Wood (5-4) hit an RBI single and Luis Valbuena homered for the Cubs, who bounced back from an 11-1 loss Friday night. Wood allowed two runs and three hits in 7 1-3 innings, struck out three and walked two. "I felt good all game," Wood said. "I made a bad pitch there to Quentin. I wanted a cutter in, but didnt quite get it all the way in there and he got through it. But other than that everything was working pretty good all game." Quentin, who missed the previous four games with a groin injury, hit an 86 mph pitch an estimated 405 feet off the left-field facade with one out in the eighth to chase Wood. Quentin has five career pinch homers and two in one week. Yasmani Grandal was aboard on a one-out walk. Other than that, "my fastball was locating down and I got some quick outs there," Wood said. "All in all, no complaints other than one pitch, but thats going to happen." Quentin also hit a two-run, pinch homer last Saturday at Colorado. He hurt his groin on Sunday and hadnt played until Saturday nights appearance. "Thats a hard thing to do to pinch-hit -- one of the hardest roles in our game to come off the bench without playing and go step in the batters box against pitcher and hit a home run," manager Bud Black said. "That is hard to do and he has done it twice in a week. "When Carlos does that, that is what we expect," Black said. "He is a dynamic offensive player and our team changes." Problem is, the Padres havent seen much of Quentin this year. He missed the first 39 games after starting the season on the disabled list with a bone bruise in his left knee. "He makes us better," Black said. "Hes arguably our best offensive player each and every night he is in the game." Valbuena extended his hitting streak to eight games when he drove an 88 mph fastball from Billy Buckner into the right field seats with one out in the sixth. It was his third. Nate Schierholtz doubled to right with two outs. The Padres intentionally walked Darwin Barney to get to Wood, who singled up the middle to drive in Schierholtz. Valbuena also scored in the fourth, reaching on a walk, advancing on Welington Castillos single and coming in on Schierholtzs base hit. Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his sixth save in seven chances. Buckner (0-1) started in place of Andrew Cashner, who is on the disabled list with a sore right elbow. Buckners contract was purchased earlier Saturday from Triple-A El Paso. He allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings, struck out four and walked three. NOTES: In a pregame ceremony, the Padres honoured first responders involved in fighting last weeks wildfires. The players and coaches formed two lines in the outfield and greeted the first responders as they walked in from the warning track. ... We won for sure in one of the most difficult places to win.Mourinhos side could have had more goals, with Diego Costa failing to finish a couple of good opportunities, and were generally very much in control throughout the game, showing their ability to cope with a combative Stoke outfit on a chilly evening. Stoke beat Arsenal 3-2 here after jumping out to a 3-0 lead by halftime, and won by the same scoreline against Chelsea at home last season. But the London club had no such problems on this occasion, with Terry providing the visitors with a perfect start. Fabregas swung in a corner and Terry got the betteer of Geoff Cameron to head in his first Premier League goal since December 2013.dddddddddddd. The Chelsea captain has now scored in the last 15 Premier League seasons. And the visitors could have added a second goal just after the half-hour mark as Nemanja Matic made a fine tackle to rob Cameron of possession, the Blues broke away and the ball was fed to Costa, who was through one on one with Asmir Begovic but sent his shot narrowly wide.Charlie Adam had Stokes best chance for an equalizer midway through the second half but sent his shot from just outside the area curling just wide of the post.Shortly afterward, Chelsea made the game safe as the ball came to Fabregas in the box from Eden Hazard and the Spaniard took one touch before scuffing a shot that deceived Begovic to roll in.Stoke is 13th in the table after 17 games. Chelsea, meanwhile, is hoping to continue the trend that the team that tops the standings at Christmas goes on to clinch the title. Seven of the last 10 leaders at Christmas did so, including Chelsea in 2004-05, 05-06 and 09-10.What we did in the past is not important, Mourinho said. Whats important is this season, and this season we are top of the league since day one and we are there because we are playing really well. ' ' '
NEW YORK -- The NBA said Thursday that its referees made a mistake when they ejected Los Angeles forward Blake Griffin in the Clippers 105-103 loss at Golden State on Wednesday night. Griffin was ejected for his second technical with 10:43 left after scuffling with Andrew Bogut, following Warriors forward Draymond Green to the showers after they got into it at the end of the third. "After a league review of the Clippers-Warriors game, we have come to the conclusion that Blake Griffin should not have been ejected from the game," said Rod Thorn, the NBAs president of basketball operations. "A common foul should have been called on Griffin for initially attempting to dislodge the Warriors Andrew Bogut and a technical foul should have been assessed to Bogut for grabbing Griffin by the shirt and wrestling with him." With Griffin gone, the Clippers missed several key chances in the waning moments. "If you look at it, I didnt do anything and I got thrown out of the game. It all boils down to they (referees) fell for it," Griffin said after the game. "To me, its cowardly basketball. I dont know their intentions, but it worked. ... If I knew the answer Id probably be in a different position. Tonight I got two technicals for nothing." Also Thursday, the NBA fined Green $15,000 for failing to leave the court in a timely manner after his ejection. LOUIS -- Adam Wainwright is rounding back into the shape the St. Louis Cardinals have become accustomed to from their ace. Wainwright posted his 19th win, pitching a shutout Wednesday night as the Cardinals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 to hold their 2 1/2-game edge in the NL Central. It was his fourth consecutive win after a dreadful August during which he lost four of six starts and had a 5.17 ERA. "For a long while I wasnt very good," he said. "It was good to be back making pitches when I need to." Wainwright (19-9) worked around seven hits and tied for the major league lead in wins and shutouts. St. Louis has won four of five and kept its advantage over second-place Pittsburgh. Milwaukee dropped 2 1/2 games behind the Pirates for the second NL wild-card spot. It was the second time in less than two weeks Wainwright went the distance against Milwaukee. He gave up one run to the Brewers in a 9-1 victory on Sept. 7 at Miller Park. "I would say that was an impressive pitching performance," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "He had everything and then when you watch the ninth and see 95 pop up there and you realize that this guy still had a lot in the tank." Mike Fiers (6-3) held the Cardinals hitless until Wainwright singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth. It was Fiers first start since beaning Miamis Giancarlo Stanton last week, ending his season. Fiers said he needed to forget about hitting Stanton in order to help his team. "Obviously, everyone knows what happened," he said. "But we have games ahead of us, we have games to win, important games and this was an important one." Wainwright struck out seven and walked two in his ninth career shutout. He has thrown three shutouts this year, matching Detroits Rick Porcello and Miamis Henderson Alvarez for most in the majors. Wainwright and Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw are atop the majors in wins. This was the Cardinals 21st shutout of the season, their most since 1968 when Bob Gibson aand the rest of the staff had 30.dddddddddddd. Fiers gave up one earned run and three hits in seven innings. "Wainwright gave up more hits but he was able to pitch out of jams," he said. "Pretty much the only jam I got into, they made the hits when they had to and they needed to. I needed to be better in that one inning, I wasnt, so they capitalize." The Cardinals broke through in the seventh. After hit a drive that went about 3 feet wide of the foul pole, Matt Holliday walked with one out and reached third on Matt Adams single, continuing home when Gold Glove centre fielder Carlos Gomez slipped and mishandled the hit for an error. It appeared as if Holliday was about to stop at third before Gomez stumbled. Once third base coach Jose Oquendo saw the opening, he waved Holliday home to score the Cardinals first run in 17 innings. "I dont think that surprised anybody, either," Matheny said. "He was able to turn it back up. When were not getting things going, weve got to try and make things happen." Jhonny Peralta singled home Adams. TRAINERS ROOM Cardinals: RHP Michael Wacha, whose last start was skipped after he struggled in his return from a shoulder injury, is scheduled to start Saturday against Cincinnati. In two starts this month, he pitched seven innings and had a 7.71 ERA. Wacha threw his third bullpen session since his last start on Wednesday and did enough to convince Matheny he was ready. UP NEXT Brewers: Kyle Lohse (12-9, 3.81 ERA) pitches Thursday night against the Cardinals. He has lost five of his past six decisions, including twice to St. Louis. In those two losses, in which he lasted four innings both times, Lohse gave up 14 runs on 13 hits, including four homers. Cardinals: Shelby Miller (10-9, 3.75) has given up one earned run over 20 innings in three starts this month. He has won his past two decisions, following four consecutive no decisions. Miller won both of his starts against Milwaukee this season, giving up four runs in 12 innings. ' ' '
ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders placed first-round pick D.J. Hayden on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday after he underwent sports hernia surgery on his injured groin. The Raiders also added linebacker Miles Burris to the active roster and re-signed defensive lineman Brian Sanford. Hayden played in eight games this season before injuring his groin in practice earlier this month. He struggled in his final game, allowing two touchdown passes in a loss to Philadelphia. It was a rough debut season for Hayden, who was picked 12th overall out of Houston despite suffering a near-fatal practice injury that cut his final season in college short. "He had his ups and downs," coach Dennis Allen said. "He had some times where I thought he played really well, and some times where he looked like a rookie out there. But I think for where hes at, for the things that hes had to go through, I was pleased with his progress and now hes got to go through another rehab process and begin to start getting ready for next year. It will be a great thing for him to have a full off-season where he can work out, get himself in shape, get bigger, get stronger and get ready for next year." Hayden missed out on that chance last off-season after he collided with a teammate in practice at Houston one year ago, tearing a blood vessel off the back of his heart. He was rushed into surgery for a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart. The injury is 95 per cent fatal in the field, according to doctors, and is most commonly associated with high-speed motor vehicle accidents. Hayden didnt know if hed ever be able to walk again, much less play football. But he eventually recovered and worked his way back to get drafted by the Raiders. After a setback in May when he had to undergo surgery to repair an abdominal scar, Hayden was finally cleared for contact midway through training camp and played eight games before the groin injury. Burris spent the first 11 weeks on the physically unable to perform list after off-season knee surgery after starting 15 games as a rookie last year. Kevin Burnett and rookie Sio Moore have stepped in and played well at outside linebacker, leaving Burris to a backup and special teams role for now. "Hes a guy we have to work in," Allen said. "We wont just throw him out there on Sunday and expected to take 60 snaps. Hes a guy who we felt like was healthy enough that he could help us. I want to try and get an opportunity to get him in the game. Well see how he does." NOTES: RB Darren McFadden (hamstring), WR Denarius Moore (shoulder) and DE Jason Hunter did not practice. ... The Canadians had started the second day of the tournament with a 22-12 triumph over Spain in the quarter-final, led by John Moonlights two tries. In the semi, the game began poorly for Canada as a mistake from the kickoff led to Portugal crossing via Aderito Esteves wide out. Pedro Leal landed the touchline extras. It looked like Canada would rally when Harry Jones set off on an impressive break-out following Nanyak Dalas evasive work close to his own try-line. However, the ball was turned over and Portugal soon struck when Miguel Lucas went in under the posts. Leal was successful again, making it 14-0. That score was compounded by the loss of Canadian Ciaran Hearn to injury in back play. His replacement, Adam Kleeberger, scored a try soon after to reduce Portugals lead to just seven points. Mack then capitalized on a Portuguese error, racing in and make it 14-12 at the break. Manuel Costa and David Mateus extended the Portugese lead further in the opening exchanges of the second half to make it 26-12 with four minutes remaining. Moonlight and Mike Scholtz responded for Canada, cutting the lead to two points with 20 seconds left to play before Mateus landed the final scoore.dddddddddddd Later, Fiji won its first Dubai Sevens rugby title by blitzing last seasons two best teams, New Zealand in the semifinals and South Africa in the final. Fiji gave New Zealand, the World Cup and world series champion and winner of the first leg at Gold Coast, its heaviest defeat in the series 15-year history by 44-0 then proceeded to score four tries in the final before South Africa replied. Fijis sevens talent has been far less of a doubt than their consistency. They have won the series only once, in 2006, and started this series with a quarter-final loss in Gold Coast. But in their first final in five tournaments going back to last season, Benito Masilevu was over 90 seconds in, and again in the eighth minute from a patient pass by Pio Tuwai. A minute later, South Africa had a man sin-binned and Samisoni Viriviri scored from the kickoff. From 19-0 at halftime, it became 24-0 when Osea Kolinisau spoiled South Africa scrum ball and flicked it to his side and Emosi Mulevoro ran in untouched from halfway. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs have signed Canadian Football League star Weston Dressler to a futures contract, hoping he can bolster a relatively weak wide receiver corps. The 28-year-old Dressler has spent the past six years in the CFL, where he caught 442 passes for 6,531 yards and 43 touchdowns for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He caught 70 passes for more than 1,000 yards and nine TDs in helping the Roughriders win the Grey Cup. The Chiefs have not announced the signing, which appeared on the NFLs transaction report. Dressler was a standout at North Dakota but never generated much interest from the NFL. He is listed at 5-foot-7, 179 pounds. The Chiefs could be looking at Dressler to replace wide receiver Dexter McCluster, who is due to become a free agent. Fake Jerseys For Sale . MILWAUKEE -- One slugger back, one slugger down for the Milwaukee Brewers. Outfielder Ryan Braun has been activated from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined with a right oblique strain. He started Tuesday nights game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Third baseman Aramis Ramirez was placed on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. He got hurt fielding a bouncer in Saturday nights 5-4 win over the Yankees. The battered Brewers lost another key player when outfielder Carlos Gomez left the Pirates game after the bottom of the fifth with lower back tightness. He was considered day-to-day. Braun was hitting .318 with six homers and 18 RBIs when he got hurt. Seeing Ramirez go down didnt add any extra urgency, Braun said. The Brewers had discussed possibly sending Braun to the minors for a rehab game Monday but weather and travel issues curtailed that plan. Instead, the slugger was back his customary No. 3 position in the batting order Tuesday. "I think hes going to be good. Hes a guy that when he sat in the past hes been pretty good rright off, so Im hoping thats what happens," manager Ron Roenicke said.dddddddddddd Neither Roenicke nor Ramirez knew how long it might take for the veteran third baseman to get over his pulled hamstring, the first such injury of Ramirezs 16-year career. Milwaukee on Tuesday also optioned outfielder Caleb Gindl back to Triple-A Nashville and recalled utility man Elian Herrera, who was batting .359 in the minors. Herreras versatility should help if Gomez has to begin a suspension this week for his role in a benches-clearing scrum against the Pirates in April. Milwaukee expected to hear soon from the National League about Gomezs appeal. It has been a tough few days for Gomez. Milwaukees leadoff hitter was hit in the left forearm by a pitch Sunday against the Yankees; he was hit on the arm again Tuesday on a changeup by Pirates starter Gerrit Cole. For the Pirates, Starling Marte was out of the starting lineup again with a sore back, though manager Clint Hurdle said it was possible the outfielder might be available off the bench. ' ' '

The slumping slugger homered twice to break out of a 5-for-34 slide, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-2. "Anytime you can do something like that, especially when you help your team win a ballgame, is huge and it feels good," said Alvarez, who started for only the eighth time this month. Alvarez, making his second career start at first base, went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, a walk and his seventh stolen base. He said it is difficult to hit well when not playing regularly, but he approaches each game as though he is starting. "You have no other choice, its what you have to do," he said. "Its easier said than done sometimes, but the at-bats you do get every once in a while, you have to try to take advantage of them and create an environment where it feels like youre playing every day. Treat every at- bat with the same intensity, same focus." Alvarez hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning and a solo drive in the fifth against starter Wily Peralta (15-8). Russell Martin also connected for a three-run homer off the right-hander, who held the Pirates hitless for 3 2-3 innings but quickly fell apart and exited after five. Pittsburgh starter Edinson Volquez (11-7) pitched out of trouble almost every inning to improve to 3-0 in five August starts. The right-hander allowed 11 hits and two walks in 5 2-3 innings, but Milwaukee managed only two runs off him. "You got to the point, once those bases were loaded, he was able to put a foot down and just stop it with quality pitches in quality locations," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. Third-place Pittsburgh won its third consecutive game to pull within four of the NL Central-leading Brewers. Each team had 12 hits, but Pittsburgh took advantage of its chances while Milwaukee squandered its opportunities. "Our big boys were up when we needed them up, but they got the big hits when we didnt," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke saaid.dddddddddddd Martin was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, a double and a walk. Neil Walker went 3 for 4 with a double, a walk and three RBIs. Scooter Gennett hit his ninth homer in the second for Milwaukee. PREP WORK After Pittsburgh took a 3-2 lead in the fourth, the Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half. Volquez got Ryan Braun to pop out and then struck out Aramis Ramirez to end the threat. "I stayed with the scouting report, basically with the fastball inside," Volquez said. RARE SUCCESS The Pirates have won the first two games of the series but still are only 39-77 at Miller Park. "This place has been a lot of a Rubiks Cube when we come in here and play. But we always turn the page," Hurdle said. STILL RESTING Pirates rookie Gregory Polanco, in a 1-for-27 slump, was on the bench for the fourth consecutive game. BASERUNNING BLUNDER With the Brewers down 9-2 in the sixth, Carlos Gomez was thrown out by a step trying to advance from first to third on a sharp single to left. Starling Martes throw to Josh Harrison easily beat Gomez for the second out of the inning. TRAINERS ROOM Pirates: INF Clint Barmes has gone 3 for 15 in four rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis. UP NEXT Pirates RHP Vance Worley (5-3) looks to bounce back from his worst start of the season when the teams conclude a three-game series Sunday. Worley allowed a season-high six runs in six innings Monday during a 7-3 loss to Atlanta. Mike Fiers (3-1) will make his fourth start since replacing Garza in the rotation. Fiers has won all three of his previous starts and has a 0.86 ERA in those games. ' ' '
TORONTO -- Goalkeeper Milos Kocic was answering reporters questions outside the Toronto FC locker-room Tuesday morning when it became clear he was needed elsewhere. His teammates had headed to a nearby room at BMO Field for a players-only meeting in the wake of a fourth straight MLS loss. A team official hovered by the media scrum, trying to politely intercede. But the questions continued. Then out came impatient captain Torsten Frings to reclaim his goalie. The former German international gave Kocic a "lets wrap it up" gesture and the scrum was over. On and off the pitch, Frings runs the Toronto FC show. The good news for manager Aron Winter is that Frings is now just "a couple of days" away from returning from the strained hamstring that has sidelined him since the season opener in Seattle on March 17. "Its not going to take weeks with him," Winter said of his 35-year-old defensive stopper. "Hes very close to coming back," he added. Asked if Frings could play Saturday against visiting Chivas USA (2-3-0), Winter replied: "That, we have to wait (and see)." But when Winter was asked if he will be popping the champagne at seeing Frings back, the Dutch coach turned serious. "No, no, no ... Im popping the champagne at the end of the season when we make the playoffs and we have got good results." Still, he welcomed the imminent return of his captain. "Torsten is very important for the team. Its not only about his qualities, technical and tactical, but also about his leadership." Like the luxury German automobile he drives, Frings is a thoroughbred. And when he talks, players listen. His English is ever-improving, as witnessed by a recent "Whats up bro" to a colleague as he walked on the pitch at BMO Field. The team declined to make Frings available Tuesday. At 0-4-0, Toronto needs something to kickstart its season. Despite reaching the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, Winters side has yet to register a point in MLS play this season. The team has been outscored 9-2 in four league games -- although six of those goals were conceded in its first two outings. Toronto also has yet to lead an MLS game this season. Winters position is the club is playing well but paying the price for defensive mistakes and not converting its own chances in front of goal. Critics might respond that good teams find ways to win. Toronto has done that just once this season, compiling a 1-5-2 record in league and CONCACAF Champions League play. Like a parent with a wayward child, Winter manages to be hopeful, disappointed, perplexed and understanding about his team all at the same time. But he has added to his shopping list of discontent in recent days. While never one to name names in public, he has said some players have let the team down at certain moments. And he has tangentially suggested that some veterans have not stepped up in Frings absence. He also noted he did not see "the fire" in his players until it was too late in Saturdays 2-1 loss in Montreal. "The confidence is there, but were missing something," he said. "Were trying to figure it out, to be sharper on certain things. But its not a good start, its a very bad start. "Im still confident, Ive got all the belief with the other games that we have, that were going to get a lot of points to get to the playoffs." Winter has said he will make changes. Asked whether that will come from inside or outside the squad, he replied "both." Giveaways have cost Toronto FC dearly recently. "The goals we concede are just ridiculous," said Kocic. In Montreal, the Impact scored after midfielder Terry Dunfields pocket was picked and defender Ty Harden failed to clear the ball properly. Players respond to such errors in different ways. "Thats part of football," said Dunfield, adding "mistakes are going to happen." "I wish I could say I could just forget it but of course Ive thinking about it -- especially the second goal in Montreal -- thats all Ive thought about for like the last three days," said Harden. Winter has no answer for such errors. "I dont know exactly why, but its not good," he said. Such giveaways are a cardinal sin in a 4-3-3 system designed around ball possession. "Were trying to mimic Barcelona and Ajax and all that stuff. If you want to mimic them then you have to keep the ball," said Kocic who did his part with some artful distribution from the back. "Whats really the point of playing this system if were not doing the right things?" be added. Tuesdays players-only meeting was nothing special, according to defender Richard Eckersley who says such gatherings are held regularly. "The message was Were all in as a team and were going to show that Saturday." Despite the recent run, players insist morale is good. "This is one of the tightest groups of players Ive ever been part of," said Dunfield. Added Eckersley: "I believe in this team. I think weve got a great team spirit. Eventually, if we just be a bit patient, it will all come good." After five games in 14 days (an 0-4-1 run that included a trip to Mexico), Toronto players now get to sleep in their own bed and take part in a full week of training. "Saturday to me is like a clean slate," said Eckersley. "Were starting again." But Kocic has not forgotten one bit of Torontos bad start. "You dont want to get into that mentality of losing games and I feel like it can easily go the wrong way if we dont step up on the weekend and understand that we have to score goals, we have to possess (the ball)," he said. "There are no more excuses," he added. NOTES -- Winter says defender Adrian Cann, back from a serious knee injury, could play Saturday. Rowe is expected back in Toronto after Portlands goalie ranks return to normal. Fergie Jenkins Jersey Cubs .com) - Stanley Johnson had 18 points and No. Albert Almora Jr. Jersey Cubs . Dickey for a season and a half in a Blue Jays uniform: we dont know. Who knows what to expect from a pitch, the knuckleball, that in one moment confounds a hitter and in the next is traveling, with plenty of spin, more than 400 feet in the opposite direction? Who knows how to manage a knuckleball pitcher? When is the right time to remove him from the game? These guys dont tire as quickly because they dont strain their arms and you cant predict when the pitch is going to flatten out just that once, which could be the difference in the game. All of the above came in to play in Friday nights 5-4 loss to the White Sox, a game in which Dickey no-hit Chicago for four innings but left without recording an out in the seventh. By then hed allowed five hits, four of which landed on the other side of the outfield fence. Actually, three of them did. One of them hit the foul pole. “One less home run, we win that game,” said Dickey. “Its just a really bizarre outing to strike out nine guys, get all those swings and misses on what I felt like was a really good knuckleball tonight.” Then, some home run talk. “Three of the four home runs were possibly mistakes, two I know,” said Dickey. “Normally, theyre a foul ball here or a miss hit here, but they just didnt miss them tonight.” Jose Abreu and Dayan Viciedo hit solo home runs in the fifth to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead. Those were Chicagos first two hits of the evening. The Blue Jays bounced back with back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth, one from Edwin Encarnacion and the other off the bat of Dioner Navarro.dddddddddddd. Dickey, sporting an 11.81 ERA in the seventh inning this season, couldnt give his team the shutdown frame it needed. Abreu clubbed his second home run of the night to lead off and, after Adam Dunn walked, Alexei Ramirez clanked a two-run shot off the left field foul pole. The knuckleballers night, so promising two innings before, was over. In six-plus innings, Dickey allowed five earned runs on five hits (four home runs) and one walk. He struck out nine. He was so good and then he wasnt. Theres no discernible pattern outside of his bloated fifth (9.39) and seventh inning ERAs and who knows what to make of those? Dickeys ERA in the sixth is 2.38. “I thought his knuckleball was as good as its been,” said manager John Gibbons. Then, some home run talk. “Its a pitch that can come and go,” said Gibbons. “I mean, one inning it can disappear, one hitter it can disappear and all of a sudden it clicks in. Its tough.” Then, he offered an admission: its hard to determine what to do with Dickey as a game wears on. “Its a totally different way to manage a game,” said Gibbons. “But hes here to win games for us and he needs to stay out there.” Dickeys loss on Friday night dropped his season record to 6-7. His ERA climbed from 4.04 to 4.24. In 51 appearances with the Blue Jays in a season and a half, Dickeys allowed 51 home runs. His win-loss record: 20-20. So there is some symmetry amid the unpredictability. ' ' '
FLORENCE, Italy -- Inter Milan won 2-1 at Fiorentina in Serie A on Saturday to keep alive its faint hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Inter moved five points behind fourth-place Fiorentina and eight points behind third-place Napoli, which visits relegation-threatened Sassuolo on Sunday. "We were very good tonight, even if we created a lot of chances but still risked drawing the match," Inter coach Walter Mazzarri said. "Obviously there are so many areas we can still improve in, but I liked the football we played." Inter took the lead in the 34th minute when Rodrigo Palacio, who earlier hit the post, chested down Fredy Guarins pass, and right-footed it past on-rushing Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto. Fiorentina levelled immediately after the break as a rare mistake from Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic allowed in a long-range effort from Juan Cuadrado. Substitute Mauro Icardi scored what was to prove the winner in the 65th when he volleyed home Yuto Nagatomos cross, although there was a suspicion of offside. "Its a mistake, but well accept it," Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella said. "But its the second match that weve lost at home in this way. "The team didnt deserve to lose. With a bit more luck we could have drawn but we had too little energy." It was Icardis first appearance of 2014 after numerous injuries. Fiorentina brought on Mario Gomez three minutes later for his first appearance in five months. Gomez was Fiorentinas marquee signing when he joined in the summer from Bayern Munich for a reported 20 million euros ($26 million) but injured his left knee in a match against Cagliari on Sept. 15. LONDON -- The Ukrainian city of Lviv withdrew its bid for the 2022 Winter Games on Monday, becoming the third contender to drop out of the race for an Olympics that no one seems to want. Lviv pulled out because of the continuing political and security crisis in Ukraine, where government forces are battling an insurgency by pro-Russian separatists. Lviv officials said they would now focus on bidding for the 2026 Winter Games instead. The decision to withdraw, which had been widely expected, followed talks between Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and IOC President Thomas Bach. "We concluded that it would be extremely difficult to pursue the 2022 bid under current circumstances but that a future bid would make sense for Ukraine and Ukrainian sport," Bach said in a statement. The announcement came exactly one week before the International Olympic Committee selects a short list of finalists for the 2022 Games. Three cities remain in contention: Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing, and Oslo. With Lviv out, the IOC executive board is likely to retain all three and not cut any of the candidates. The host city will be selected by the full IOC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 31, 2015. "We have always said that we will only continue if we can be certain to deliver on all our promises," Lviv bid CEO Sergei Goncharov told The Associated Press. "Due to the current circumstances in Ukraine, we, however, felt that a bid for 2026 would make more sense. We remain convinced of the positive impact that hosting Olympic Games would have for the city of Lviv and the whole country." Lvivs withdrawal follows the earlier pullouts of Stockholm and Krakow, Poland. The Swedish capital dropped out in December after politicians declined to give financial support. The Polish city withdrew last month after 70 per cent of residents rejected the bid in a referendum. The future of Oslos bid also remains uncertain. The Norwegian government has yet to back the project and wont make a decision until the autumn. In addition, recent polls have shown that more than half the population opposes the games. If Oslo drops out later, that would leave only two cities standing. Almaty, commercial capital of the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan in Central Asia, hosted the 2011 Asian Winter Games and would shape up as the favourite. Beijing, which hosted the 2008 Olympics, is bidding to become the first city to stage both the Summer and Winter Games. Beijing proposes holding Alpine events 120 miles (190 kilometres) away in the northern Chinese city of Zhangjiakou. And with Pyeongchang, South Korea, hosting the 2018 Winter Games and Tokyo the 2020 Olympics, the IOC would normally be reluctant to send the games to Asia for a third straight time. Even before the start of the official 2022 campaign, two potential serious contenders stayed away. St. Moritz-Davos and Munich cancelled proposed bids after voters in Switzerland and Germany voted "no" in referendums. The troubled race poses a crisis for the IOC, which is running out of potential sites for the games. Potential host cities, especially in Western Europe, are concerned about the financial costs of the games. Many have been scared off by the $51 billion price tag associated with Februarys Winter Olympics in Sochi. Russia spent much of the record sum on long-term infrastructure projects for the entire region. Rio de Janeiros delayed preparations for the 2016 Olympics are also a major concern. Changes to the bidding process and efforts to reduce the cost of the games are among the key issues being addressed by the IOC as part of Bachs "Agenda 2020" -- his blueprint for the future of the Olympic movement that will be voted on in December. Despite their withdrawal, Lviv bid officials have travelled to Pyeongchang this week for debriefings on the Sochi Games. Bach said the IOCs preliminary assessment of the Lviv bid found "a huge potential for future development." "We will continue to pursue our dream," Goncharov said. "We have learned a great deal during our first ever bid and we will come back stronger." Ray Knight Jersey . Not just the three goals in seven minutes in the third period, but a better effort in a 4-1 victory over Slovakia on Saturday at the world hockey championship than Canada showed in a stunning shootout loss to France. "Our team was much better tonight than it was last night for longer periods of time," coach Dave Tippett said. "We were harder on the forecheck, harder at the net. ... We put a lot of pressure on that veteran group today to make sure this gets done tonight and thats why its good to see the guys do it." That veteran group was led by Joel Ward, who scored twice, and Cody Hodgson and Kevin Bieksa, who each scored once in a game that was tied 1-1 until early in the third period. Those players arent seasoned internationally, but theyve been part of plenty of NHL games and came up big when Canada was in danger of losing two straight to start this tournament for the first time since pro players started going in 1977. A lack of familiarity between teammates contributed to the loss in the opener and there was some disjointed play early on against Slovakia. But Hodgson doesnt think that should be an excuse or that the expectations should be lowered for this Team Canada. "Its not something that were used to, losing, especially early on," he said. "Were Canadian hockey players and thats what we were born to do. It shouldnt take too long to get accustomed to each other." It will take some more time before things are perfect on that front, but its a process that will continue with Mondays game against the Czech Republic and beyond. Tippett sees improvement shift-by-shift. "The players, youre starting to find rhythms, find roles," he said. "They know when theyre going out there, they know situations that they play in. So they get more comfortable, they get more comfortable with the team game." One way to make Canadas team game work is to simply play five-on-five. Through two games, this team hasnt given up a goal at even strength, but after bad penalties against France, another parade to the penalty box led to Karol Slobodas power-play goal at 12:24 of the second period. Canadda took three penalties in the second period, which was again problematic.dddddddddddd "Its definitely a different game," Ward said. "It took us adjusting for sure. Its a different style. Were not used to the wide rink." What Canadian hockey players are used to doing on the international stage is putting up goals in bunches. Ward tied the score at 1 at the 17:24 mark of the second by tipping Jason Garrisons shot past Czech goaltender Jan Laco, and his first goal in a Team Canada jersey provided a spark. Hodgson scored what turned out to be the game-winner 7:07 into the third period, taking a pass from Nazem Kadri and beating Laco with a perfect shot from between the faceoff circles. Bieksa piled on with a goal that tipped up and over Laco and in at 17:56, then Ward put the icing on at 18:49. "I think we started to get a few bounces," Tippett said. "We had some great chances early, didnt capitalize. Its nice to see things even out in the end. It gives players confidence. Everybody worked hard tonight. Its good to see players get rewarded, even though it was late." It took until the third period before this Team Canada could breathe easy, but once Laco started wearing down and goaltender Ben Scrivens stayed strong in making 23 saves on 24 shots, the floodgates opened to make it look like more of a lopsided game than it really was. "I dont think were going to blow teams out," Scrivens said. "This was a tighter game than the score showed, but we stuck with it and thats what were going to have to do all tournament, I think." By the end, Canada was having fun after a night in which it dealt with plenty of jeers from a mostly pro-Slovak crowd at Chizhovka-Arena. "Any time youre winning, its always a good time," Ward said. "Regardless if youre up by one or two or four, youre excited to be winning." NOTES — Scrivens started the second game of the tournament as planned after James Reimer played against France based on seniority. ... Sean Monahan played more in the first two periods than he did the entire game against France as he split time with Mark Scheifele as the fourth-line centre. Follow @SWhyno on Twitter ' ' '

Gerard Deulofeu insists he is happy with Everton manager Roberto Martinez, and says the players need to take more responsibility for their poor form. Everton currently sit 11th in the Premier League, 19 points off the top four, and have drawn the joint-most games in the division this season. It is underachievement in the eyes of the Spaniard, but he insists the season can turn around with a win in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports 1 HD, as well as a victory at Wembley over Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday. Everton are currently sitting 11th in the Premier League Deulofeu told Sky Sports News HQ in an exclusive interview: The managers work is so good. We need to stay altogether and all take responsibility, because the manager does not play on the pitch.Yes, it is a difficult position, but now is no time to think about this, we have a nice week with the derby and the chance to reach the FA Cup final. In my opinion I am happy with my coach. Everton fans display a message for Roberto Martinez This week is the most important, because the results have been bad this season, and we stay in a bad position, and we have a chance in the FA Cup.Its so important, and we need to go to the semi-final with confidence, and first we need to play at Anfield together, to win and take three points. Everton support team carry off a pitch invader during the 1-1 draw against Southampton on Saturday Deulofeu is at Everton on a permanent deal following a loan spell from Barcelona in the 2013/14 season, but the La Liga side still have a buy-back clause on the 22-year-old.He insists he loves the club and wants to stay put for now, and offered his own explanation for their poor form this campaign. Spanish midfielder Deulofeu insists he loves the club Asked how much he wants to stay at Everton for the long run, Deulofeu said: A lot, because all the time I say I love Everton, I love the fans.We have a chance in the FA Cup and we need to take this chance. But I love Everton and for the moment I am a player for Everton but for the future I do not know. Im so happy here. I think we played well in the first half of the season, but I think we concede a lot of goals. When we are winning 1-0 or 2-0, maybe we dont take responsibility together and say: Now it is time for defence together and no conceding. Now we are in 11th position and it is so difficult to arrive at the European positions. Lin will make about $15 million this season in the last year of a deal that counts only $8 million against the salary cap. The Lakers have the cap room to absorb Lins contract. Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak says the trade allows the team to acquire a solid player and two draft picks while maintaining financial flexibility. Lin averaged 12.5 points and 4.1 assists last season, but lost his starting job because coach Kevin McHale preferred Patrick Beverleys defensive play.dddddddddddd Lin was born in Los Angeles and figures to be popular with the regions large Asian community. FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. Steve Nash (Lakers): I watched the game Sunday against Minnesota and to see him have to leave the game due to back issues is concerning. He doesnt look like he has the same explosiveness in his game as in the past. Obviously everyone loses that step/pop as we get older but to watch him this season its clear that hes far from 100%. Hes had an amazing career and as I watch right now I wonder whether hell be able to play at a high level and finish his contract with the Lakers through next season. Fingers crossed he gets well; its never easy to watch an older star player deal with injuries at the end of their career. 2. UTAH JAZZ (0-7): Man, I feel bad for Coach Tyrone Corbin. The team he has to coach is far from capable of competing at a high level on most nights. This is going to be a long season for the Jazz faithful in Salt Lake City who have been used to a good or very good level of play for over the past 25 years. Everyone was on board with the Suns (5-2) and 76ers (4-3) as the Tank Nation leaders yet theyve been a pleasant surprise. After watching the Jazz in person and a few Suns and 76ers games on TV there is no doubt that Utah is the worst team in the NBA by far. I understand teams trying to clean up their salary cap and add future picks but this is tough to watch. I feel bad for the season ticket holders and sponsors paying full price for a totally inferior product. 3. STEVEN ADAMS (Thunder): Its not as bad as the grief I get from Raptors fans for their trading of the draft rights to Roy Hibbert (17th overall) for Jermaine ONeal but Im starting to have a few fans already ask me about this guy drafted 12th by OKC with the Raptors pick that was used to acquire Kyle Lowry from Houston. Its so hard to evaluate how a trade works out until you let the whole process work itself out over a period of years in relation to both Lowry and Adams. I will say that so far Adams has impressed me with his great energy, instincts and grit. His numbers are far from Earth shattering (6ppg, 6rpg , 1.3 blocks, 52% shooting) yet if you watch him he has really nice potential and will grow at a nice steady pace in OKC not having the weight of the world on his shoulders as a young player. He was a good get for Sam Presti with the 12th pick. 4. STEVE CLIFFORD (Bobcats): Must be a day for Steves! I hope and pray that hes ok and ready to go again. Hes a longtime friend from my coaching days and weve texted back and forth since his health scare. Hes an outstanding coach and terrific person and will do a nice job for the young Charlotte squad. As I well know, the coaching profession is a meat grinder and incredibly stressful, particularly coaching a young team with limited talent. Every one of these coaches, despite the opinions on the W-L record and strategies, works their tails off and yes, are well compensated but its still a job that can break you. Ill never forget what former Utah Jazz President, GM and head coach Frank Layden said to me when I was coaching, Remember, the job doesnt love you back. Very true words and when I see Clifford, John Fox (Denver Broncos) and Gary Kubiak (Houston Texans) all experience health episodes I worry what the job/profession has become and whether the price truly is worth it. Its not an easy gig. 5. RUDY GAY & DEMAR DEROZAN (Raptors): Let me get this right out there in the open: they are NOT selfish players. Does the offence slow down and/or come to a stop when they get the ball? At times, yes. With Gay shooting 37 percent and averaging 17.6 field goal attempts, and DeRozan shooting 39 percent and averaging 16.6 field goal attempts, there are a lot of concerns about the fluidity and flow of the Raptors offence. They are legitimate concerns that Im sure Dwane Casey and his staff is spending a significant time on to address. Offensive continuity is a huge challenge on every team and is a tough habit to crack. You watch San Antonio destroy the Knicks Sunday and you see a team where the ball moves and there is incredible flow. You watch the Miami Heat on most nights and the ball and player movement is picturesque. The Raptors have a ways to go to get there but they can. Both Gay and DeRozan are guys that love to probe and attack the defence with the dribble which Im cool with. The area that both need to improve upon is identifying when to dribble it, pass it or shoot it, and they need to decide a whole lot quicker before the defence gangs up on them and their four teammates become spectators. Be decisive. The idea of using four, five, six, evenseven dribbles to create a shot when the other four guys on your team stand and watch and your opponent loads up on you forcing lower percentage shots has to be a no-no. Both are very talented offensive players that can get big numbers on their own and yet more importantly can, and know how to, do it within the confines of a more structured offence. I talk every night to coaches and scouts from opposing teams and the major theme with the Raptors is that at times these two guys make their team too easy to guard with the ball-stopping habits; habits that can and have to be broken. Its easier said than done yet this is a fixable issue. Both are good guys and team guys and want to win yet their style of play sometimes causes indecision by teammates. The improvement of the player and ball movement by the Raptors will lead to a much improved team. I have no doubt that if they improve this area theyll be a tough team for any opponent to defend and thats a benefit to everyone. Joel Embiid Jersey . Both moves were announced Tuesday. The Chiefs are poised to lose several key players from last years 11-5 team, including Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert, Pro Bowl punt returner Dexter McCluster and starting defensive end Tyson Jackson, safety Kendrick Lewis and offensive guards Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz. The deadline to use the franchise tag is March 3. "Probably not," Dorsey said. "We probably wont use it." The Chiefs used the tag on Albert last season, paying him more than $9.8 million -- the average of the top five salaries at his position the previous year. They could franchise him again but would be on the hook for 120 per cent of Alberts salary, a massive financial commitment for a team that is already bumping along just below the salary cap. Kansas City used the franchise tag on linebacker Tamba Hali two years ago, eventually signing him to a long-term contract. The same story unfolded last year for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, who signed a $56 million, five-year contract one year after receiving the tag. Dorsey did say that hes having "ongoing conversations" with representatives of all of the Chiefs free agents, including Albert, but refused to get into the specifics. "We will continue to have ongoing discussions with his representatives here at the combine," Dorsey said. "Weve done is weve reached out to every representative for every unrestricted free agent that we have, and weve also talked to Alex Smiths representative as well." Smith wont become a free agent until after the 2014 season, but signing him to an extension would not only lock him up but also offerr some salary cap relief.ddddddddddddSmiths number this is season is $8 million, but the Chiefs could trim that roughly in half with an extension. The Chiefs have already waived defensive back Dunta Robinson to free up salary, and its likely they will either restructure current contracts or part ways with some of their veterans in order to create more off-season flexibility. "I dont think its fair to talk about a players contract in a setting like this," Dorsey said. "I think thats not the proper business that you like to do." Dorsey did address several other issues at the combine, including his belief in building through the draft. Thats the same philosophy followed by his mentor, Ted Thompson of the Green Bay Packers, and one espoused by Chiefs coach Andy Reid. That means that the Chiefs are unlikely to be quite as active as they were in free agency last year, when they turned over roughly half of their roster. Free agency begins March 1. Still, there are plenty of holes to fill, especially along the offensive line. "We look at everybody right now and make sure that you cover all the positions," Reid said Thursday. "One of the tricks of the draft is that you take the best players available, if you can stay that disciplined to do so and make yourself a better football team." Other positions of need include free safety, where Lewis struggled much of the season, and wide receiver, where the Chiefs kept shuffling through options with little success. "We have a pretty good group of young players to form a nice nucleus," Reid said. "I look forward to adding guys too, and Im a big believer that you build your team through the draft. Free agency can be a bit of a tease at times, and I think you have to be real careful." ' ' '

A change in coach after the World Cup, when Christian Gourcuff replaced Vahid Halilhodzic, didnt affect the momentum.Algerias lightning-fast attacking game is based around the skilful trio of Yacine Brahimi, Sofiane Feghouli and Islam Slimani. To prove themselves, the Algerians must first deal with being drawn in the tournaments toughest group with Ghana, Senegal and South Africa.___IVORY COASTIvory Coast goes to the African championship without retired striker Didier Drogba for the first time since 2002. So, more pressure falls on Manchester City midfielder and African player of the year Yaya Toure, who hasnt always lived up to his big reputation at the African Cup.Ivory Coasts inability to win the title since its sole success in 1992 is becoming increasingly painful for a country rich in talent. This time, the campaign will be directed by flamboyant French coach Herve Renard, who does know what it takes to lift the African Cup. He won as coach of unfancied Zambia in 2012, beating Ivory Coast in the final. On the field, Toure will also be supported by in-form forwards Wilfried Bony and Gervinho.___CAMEROONCameroons miserable World Cup was immediately shrugged off as the four-time African champions emerged as a dangerous force again late last year. But a new goal-scoring threat has emerged in Vincent Aboubakar, and that may foster a more balanced team after Etoo was so often the focus.Cameroon supporters just hope the player bonus saga that spoiled their World Cup doesnt play out again at the African Cup.___TUNISIAThe only other North African team at the tournament, Tunisia might fly under the radar as Algeria gets all the attention.Solid in qualifying to win a tough group containing Senegal and Egypt, Tunisia has quietly moved up to No. 2 in the continental rankings. The players and Belgian coach Georges Leekens can also be positive about being picked in a group with Zambia, Cape Verde and Congo, simpler than the early challenges awaiting Algeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon.___SOUTH AFRICASouth Africa is perhaps the most positive it has been about the African Cup since it won in 1996 and made the final in 1998. Since then, Bafana Bafana has slid down the African football pecking order, and hasnt got past the quarterfinals in 15 years.Coach Ephraim Mashaba breathed new life into the team when he took over last year, and South Africa was unbeaten and eliminated defending champion Nigeria in qualifying.___CAPE VERDEEvery tournament needs an underdog and Cape Verde might be the big surprise of the African Cup — again. In its debut in 2013, the small Atlantic Ocean island nation made the quarterfinals ahead of Morocco, and gave Ghana a scare in the knockout stage. That breakthrough wasnt wasted and Cape Verde was the first team to guarantee its place at the 2015 tournament in Equatorial Guinea. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- President Barack Obama said Sunday that comments reportedly made by the owner of a U.S. pro basketball team are "incredibly offensive racist statements," before casting them as part of a continuing legacy of slavery and segregation that Americans must confront. "When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you dont really have to do anything, you just let them talk," Obama said when asked to respond to the reported comments from Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Obamas description of the controversy as part of a larger historical context is the latest example of his continuing willingness to expound on matters of race in his second term. After avoiding much mention of race relations during his campaign to become the first black president and in his first term, the president last summer offered a personal reflection in response to the shooting of black teenager Trayvon Martin. And now Obama has spoken out against an audio recording of a man identified as Sterling telling his girlfriend not to bring black people to games. The firestorm over Sterlings comments has quickly engulfed the National Basketball Association. Obama cast the comments through a broader prism of racism in America, adding that "we constantly have to be on guard on racial attitudes that divide us rather than embracing our diversity as a strength." "The United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation, thats still there, the vestiges of discrimination," Obama said during a news conference in Malaysia, where he was travelling. "Weve made enormous strides, but youre going to continue to see this percolate up every so often," he added. "And I think that we just have to be clear and steady in denouncing it, teaching our children differently, but also remaining hopeful that part of why statements like this stand out some much is because there has been this shift in how we view ourselves." In the recording attributed to Sterling recording and posted on the website TMZ, a male voice questions his girlfriends association with minorities. TMZ reported the woman, V. Stiviano, is of black and Mexican descent. The man asks Stiviano not to broadcast her association with black people or bring black people to games. The man specifically mentions Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson on the recording, saying, "Dont bring him to my games, OK?" Obama said hes confident NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will address the matter. He said the NBA has "an awful lot of African American players, its steeped in African American culture. MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins rewarded their manager with the best possible birthday gift. Casey McGehee hit a sharp grounder that caromed into right field off the back of reliever Gonzalez Germens foot, allowing the winning run to score, and the Miami Marlins rallied late from a three-run deficit Monday night to beat the New York Mets 4-3. "I didnt get (gifts) but Ill take the win," said Miami manager Mike Redmond, who turned 43. "The presents stopped coming about five, six years ago." Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a tying double in the eighth off Daisuke Matsuzaka, who failed to retire any of the five batters he faced in relief of Jonathon Niese. Giancarlo Stanton had an RBI single and the Marlins scored another run on shortstop Omar Quintanillas fielding error in the eighth. Christian Yelich led off the ninth with a single off Scott Rice (0-1). He advanced to second on Ed Lucas sacrifice. Germen intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton before McGehee got his RBI single. "Everybody kind of knew they were going to walk Stanton there," McGehee. "I just tried to have a good at-bat. I was able to get a ball to hit hard." Marlins closer Steve Cishek (2-1) pitched to a scoreless ninth for the win. Miami is now 15-5 at home and 6-1 in its current nine-game homestand. The Marlins have won two in a row in their final at-bat. Christian Yelich and Ed Lucas led off the eighth with walks. Stanton followed with an RBI single and Quintanilla let McGehee get through his legs, allowing Lucas to score. Saltalamacchia doubled to right-centre to make it 3-all. "Any time you can get on the board and you can get into a position that you can tie the ball game, I felt good," Saltalamacchia said. "Ive caught Daisuke before so I have seen his stuff. I was pretty comfortable up there. I was able to get decent wood in it." Kyle Farnsworth relieved Matsuzaka and with the infield drawn in retired Jeff Baker on a grounder to second. Farnsworth walked pinch-hitter Garret Jones and struck out Adeiny Hechavarria and retired Marcel Ozuna on a grounder to third. "When I was warming up in the bullpen, I was struggling with my command," Matsuzaka said through an interpreter. "I tried to focus on the batter and getting outs. I really regret taking away Nieses win the teams win." Niese pitched seven shutout innings and allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one but was replaced after throwing 108 pitches. Niese has permitted one run or less in his last four starts. "Anytime a game is lost, its tough to watch," Niese said. "But its just one game. I never want to leave a game but 108 pitches, I figured our bullpen has been doing great." Daniel Murphy and Curtis Granderson homered off Miamis Nathan Eovaldi in the first inning for 2-0 lead. Murphys shot over the fence in right field was his first of the season and Granderson hit his third with a drive that bounced off the upper deck in right-centre field. Bobby Abreu had a sacrifice fly to left, scoring David Wright in the fourth. Wright led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on Grandesons single. Eovaldi scattered five hits, walked one and struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings. "The Marlins have been hot, especially in this park and late," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "They can be really tough." Eric Young Jr. returned to the lineup and went 1 for 4 after a freakish pregame injury Sunday. Young was struck on the right cheek off a batted ball from Lucas Duda that bounced off an indoor batting cage. Although he passed concussion tests, Young said he felt dizzy and manager Terry Collins sat him out of the series finale against the Rockies. Marlins starter Jose Fernandez said his left thigh feels fine and he will make his next start after being struck by a one-hopper off the bat of Dee Gordon in the fifth inning of Miamis 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday. Fernandez went 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA in April, earning his first NL Pitcher of the Month award. NOTES: The Mets scored in the first inning for the fourth consecutive game. ... Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of teams in desperate need of points will clash on Thursday as the Philadelphia Union welcome the Chicago Fire to PPL Park in a classic six-pointer. Philadelphia enters the match sitting in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 38 points, three behind New York for the fifth and final playoff berth. Last time out, the Union suffered a 1-0 defeat to East-leading D.C. United which put a significant dent in the Unions playoff hopes. The games lone goal came after 10 minutes. A deflected cross found its way to United fullback Chris Korb, who quickly whipped the ball in to the top of the six. Luis Silva was waiting and deftly headed the ball past Union goalkeeper Rais MBolhi and into the back of the net. The Union suffered their first loss since Aug. 15 -- when they lost 2-0 at the Houston Dynamo -- though the defeat at D.C. United followed a pair of draws. The goals have dried up. You know, were struggling. We are getting chances. Were creating chances, maybe a little more commitment to get in the box, said Union manager Jim Curtin. We are going to have to find a way to fight through it, and we need to now win three games in a row to give ourselves even a chance at the playoffs. The Union were also shut out at the attacking end for a second consecutive match, the first time since April 19-26 they were blanked in back-to-back games. Conor [Caseys] up there fighting with two center backs and thats not good enough, Curtin said. We have to have more commitment from Chaco [Maidana], from Vincent [Nogueira], from Amobi [Okugo] to get in the box late. You saw today there were probably ten crosses that get knocked down around the 8-to 12-yard-line and we dont have anyone there to get on the end of it. Thats a commitment to getting in the box. Chicago, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo which extended its winless run to five matches. The Fire fell behind just after the quarter-hour. From the left side of the field, midfielder Ricardo Clark got the best of Fire veteran Logan Pause before firing a cross toward the back post. Omar Cummings split a pair of defenders to come sliding in for a simple finish. Houston then added a second goal in the 67th minute. Defender Kofi Sarkodie hit a cross from the right side to midfielder Brad Davis, who headed the ball back to a wide-open Boniek Garcia at the penalty spot, and he thumped home a picture-perfect volley with his left foot. Its been tough all year, weve tied 16 out of 29 games and youve got to turn some of those ties into wins and we havent, Fire head coach Frank Yallop said. So were not good enough. I guess we have something to slightly build on that we dont lose a ton of games, but we lost which is obviously a very disappointing result at this time of the season. But weve got to pick ourselves up, weve got play on Thursday, so weve got to get ready for that one. This will be the third and final meeting between the sides, which played to draws on April 5 and July 19. Brooklyn Nets Gear . Los Angeles earned its second Stanley Cup title in three years last spring, polishing off the championship run with a 4-1 series victory over the Rangers. The Kings lifted the Cup on June 13 after winning a 3-2 double-overtime battle at the Staples Center. Despite losing in the Cup Finals to the Kings, New York enters Thursdays showdown faring better in 2014-15 than the reigning champs. The Rangers are 22-11-4 thanks in large part to an 11-1-0 record over the last 12 games, while Los Angeles is 19-12-9 after losing three of its last four tilts. Both clubs are currently holding onto the wild card spots in their respective conferences. A hallmark of the Kings recent championship teams has been goaltending and defense, but there was little of either to be found the last time out as L.A. lost 7-6 in overtime to the visiting Nashville Predators. The setback came at the start of a seven-game homestand and dropped the Kings to 14-4-3 as the host this season. To their credit, the Kings were able to wrestle a point away from the Predators on Saturday despite trailing by scores of 5-1 and 6-2. In the end, it was Roman Josis goal 18 seconds into overtime that awarded the extra point to Nashville. Dwight King, Marian Gaborik and Jeff Carter netted goals in a span of 1:27 late in the contest to send the game to OT for the Kings. We got a point. Thats the way hockey works, right? I told our players several ttimes tonight that it was going to take seven goals to win.ddddddddddddI was right, said Kings head coach Darryl Sutter. I dont think anything was lacking. I thought it was an exciting game. King scored twice in the loss, while Alec Martinez -- who had the Cup- clinching goal versus the Rangers -- added a goal and two assists. Anze Kopitar had three assists for L.A. and Jake Muzzin chipped in a pair of helpers. Jonathan Quick was pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on nine shots. Martin Jones stopped 12-of-16 shots the rest of the way to take the loss. Quick expects to start tonight. The Kings franchise goaltender is 2-1-0 with a 1.96 goals against average in three regular-season games against the Rangers. Not counting last seasons playoff encounter, L.A. is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings with New York. The Rangers picked up their third straight victory on Wednesday night, as they kicked off a three-game tour of California with an impressive 4-1 win over the NHL-leading Anaheim Ducks. Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves to anchor Wednesdays victory in Orange County and the Rangers scored three goals during the third period en route to the win. Rick Nash, Mats Zuccarello and Dominic Moore each scored in the final stanza and Derick Brassard lit the lamp in a third straight game for the Rangers. I think it comes down to execution, said Lundqvist. I really like the way we are playing. Cam Talbot will get a turn in net tonight for the Rangers. he has never faced the Ducks. New York is 9-6-1 on the road this season and will complete this current swing Saturday in San Jose. ' ' '
MONTREAL - Rene Bourque had just nine goals and 16 points in 63 regular season games, but the Canadiens forward has become a key cog in Montreals offence during the playoffs. A trade bait name brought up over and over again on local radio, web message boards and social media all season, Bourque netted his first career playoff hat trick in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final Tuesday, giving him eight goals and 11 points in 16 playoffs games and helping his team stave off elimination with a 7-4 victory over the New York Rangers. A while his sudden emergence as a scoring threat in the playoffs has surprised many, its nothing new to his teammates. Despite his regular season struggles, they never doubted the 62, 217-pound power forward would shine through when it mattered most. "Ive said it before and Ill say it again, hes got world class speed and a world class shot and its showing right now in the playoffs," said forward Max Pacioretty, who also chipped in Tuesday night with a goal and an assist. "Hes a bigger body and he plays a simple game and that suits him well in the playoffs. Its a great time for him to step up and he was huge tonight, he helped out a lot." After the Canadiens blew a 4-1 lead in the second period on Tuesday night, Bourque halted the Rangers comeback scoring his second goal of the game at 15:10 of the second period to make the score 5-4 and give Montreal a lead they wouldnt relinquish. Bourque then added another goal at 6:33 of the third period to complete the hat trick and help the Canadiens avoid elimination for the third time in these Stanley Cup playoffs. Montreal will try to repeat the feat for a fourth time in Game 6 in New York on Thursday and force a Game 7 back in Montreal on Saturday. "Even going back to last year, he just loves this time of year," said forward Brendan Gallagher. "Hes leading by example again. For him to go out there and score not only three goals but very timely goals was big. Anytime you give up the lead like that and can come right back and score thats big. Thats what clutch guys do at this time of year, they score timely goals." Since being acquired from Calgary two years ago in a trade that saw popular scorer Michael Cammalleri go the other way, many have doubted Bourques role on this team. But not Gallagher and his teammates. They saw a hard-working character player that could come up big when it mattered most. "You just gotta understand the character he has," Gallagher explained. "Hes big. Hes a guy that we rely on. He showed up and thats what we expect from him. Hes a competitor. He loves the atmosphere and he loves the opportunity we have right now and thats kind of expected from him." Michel Therrien was also thrilled with Bourques performance. "He played a great game; he was a force out there," the Canadiens head coach said. "On the forecheck, he took the man. He was moving his feet. He was going hard to the map mat. Hes a very good scorer, so definitely that was a great performance by him." The always quite and humble Bourque wasnt about to take all the credit though. "Everybody was ready for this game," he said after the game. "We knew the situation. We got a big power-play goal early and a few others. "It was just a see-saw battle back and forth. (Dale) Weise made a great play to me. I called for the puck and somehow it got through. It was nice to get in there." The pucks have gotten through for Bourque just one less time than they did in the regular season and the Canadiens are hoping his clutch run continues as they try to come back from what is now a one-game deficit. Kohl said Monday he hired a firm to help in the search for new partners, and that any new partners who are added will have to be equally committed to keeping the team in Milwaukee. "I like to believe that bringing in new ownership ... if its done in the right way, will reinvigorate the franchise and make our future in Milwaukee stronger and more secure," he said. Keeping the team in Wisconsins largest city would require a new arena to replace the 25-year-old BMO Harris Bradley Center, also home to Marquette basketball and the Milwaukee Admirals of the AHL, he said. "Without new investors and without a new facility, would we at some point lose the Bucks? Yes," he said. Kohl, who recently retired after four terms as a U.S. senator, bought the Bucks in 1985. The team is frequently mentioned as a candidate for a move because of the age of its arena, but Commissioner David Stern said Kohls decision shows he is dedicated to preventing that. "With this announcement, Sen. Kohl continues his mission: to assure continuity of Bucks ownership by broadening its ownership base, and assuring that the fans of Wisconsin will enjoy NBA basketball and other events in a new state-of-the-art facility," Stern said. Kohl and Stern both said Kohl bought the team with the goal of keeping it in Milwaukee, and that remains a priority now. Kohl said he hadnt identified possible partners yet, and that the process was only in its infancy. When asked whether hed consider taking on a partner who demanded a majority stake, Kohl said it was too early to commit to specifics. Kohl, 78, said hes in good health, but he knew he needed to plan for the organizations long-term future.dddddddddddd He also said he was willing to contribute some of his own wealth toward the cost of a new stadium, and he hoped to secure private funding as well. If that happens, the team would have a firm private-sector commitment that could provide a convincing case for the public to finance the rest, he said. Kohl noted that Miller Park, where the Milwaukee Brewers play, is a fine facility but one that serves as little more than a baseball-only venue. And Lambeau Field, home to the Green Bay Packers, is also a one-use facility. But the BMO Harris Bradley Center hosts 200 events per year, including concerts and family events, so a new stadium would benefit the entire community, not only the Bucks, he said. Reporters asked whether potential partners would even want to invest in a team that couldnt consider a new area outside of Milwaukee, or in a team thats struggled to be competitive in recent seasons. Kohl replied that his team is profitable and its value has risen along with the values of every other NBA team. He declined to say exactly how much his team is worth. At 5-19, the Bucks are the worst team in the NBA. But Kohl said theyre a part of the community -- a part of his community -- and he wouldnt let them leave, even though he knew the franchise could be worth far more in a larger city. "It would be a big loss for this community if we lost our NBA franchise," he said. "That would be a huge step backward, for not only Milwaukee but the surrounding communities. "I dont want to see that happen. And so this asset is not for sale outside of Milwaukee." ------ AP Basketball Writer Brian Mahoney in New York contributed to this report. ' ' '
